1. What is the greatest number that can divide 18 and 24?

Another way to word this question is to find the largest common factor. Either way, I find it easiest to break the numbers down into their prime factors (prime numbers can only be divided by 1 and themselves so they cannot be divided any further).

18=2∗3∗3=21∗32

24=2∗2∗2∗3=23∗31

From here, it’s almost trivial to find all the common prime factors: 18 can only be divided by 2 once, and 24 can only be divided by 3 once. Thus the largest common factor is 2∗3=6 .

Another way to look at this:

18 can be divided by 2 only once (further division by two would result in a fraction) and can similarly be divided by 3 twice. 24 can only be divided by 3 once (further division by two would result in a fraction) and can be divided by 2 three times. So we can divide both numbers by 2 once and both numbers by 3 once. 2 times 3 is 6 so both numbers can be divided by 6. Since we cannot divide each number any further by a common number (other than 1) there is no larger number that can divide both numbers. So 6 is the largest number that divides both 18 and 24.
