    Perimeter of 1 square =

    4 × side

    12 = 4 × side

    side = 12/4 = 3 cm

    Area of first square = side × side

    = 3 × 3 = 9 cm 2

    Perimeter of 2 square =

    4 × side

    16 = 4 × side

    side = 16/4 = 4 cm

    Area of second square = side × side

    = 4 × 4 = 16 cm 2

    Area of new square = sum of area of both squares = 16 + 9 = 25 cm2 .
