Question

Water is a precious resource and it should be
conserved. Any leaking water tap should be immediately
repaired. An average drop of water is about 0.2ml. If 3
drops of water go waste per second, calculate the water
wasted in 1 week. Express it in litres. Have you noticed a
considerable amount of water ? A tanker can hold this
considerable amount of water when it is one quarter
empty. Find the capacity of the tanker in litres.

Given : An average drop of water is about 0.2ml. If 3 drops of water go waste per second, calculate the water wasted in 1 week. Express it in litres. Have you noticed a considerable amount of water ? A tanker can hold this considerable amount of water when it is one quarter empty. Find the capacity of the tanker in litres.

    Solution :

    given that,

    → 1 drop of water is about = 0.2ml

    and,

→ in one second water goes to waste = 3 drop.

    So,

    water goes to waste in 1 second = 3 * 0.2 = 0.6 ml .

    Now, we know that ,

    • 1 week = 7 days.
    • 1 day = 24 hours.
    • 1 hours = 60 minutes .
    • 1 minute = 60 seconds.

    Than,

    → Total seconds in 1 week = (7 * 24 * 60 * 60) = 604,800 seconds.

    Therefore,

    → water goes to waste in 1 week = (0.6) * (604,800) = 362,880 ml.

    Now, we know that ,

    • 1000 ml = 1 litre.

    So,

    1000 ml = 1 litre.

    → 1 ml = (1/1000) litre.

    → 362,880 ml = (1 * 362880)/1000 = 362.88 Litre .(Ans.)

Hence, 362.88 Litre of water waste in 1 week.

    _______

Now, given that, A tanker can hold this considerable amount of water when it is one quarter empty .

    So,

    → One quarter = (1/4) empty.

    Than,

    → Tank is full by = 1 – (1/4) = (3/4) th .

    Therefore,

    → (3/4) is equal to = 362.88 litre .

    → 1 is equal to = (362.88 * 4) / 3 = 483.84 Litre. (Ans.)

Hence, the capacity of the tanker is 483.84 Litres.
